Baby Got Back (Sir Mix-A-Lot) – day 5

I like big butts and I cannot lie!

Yep. Baby Got Back has made it into my 55 to 55 countdown. And don’t you dare act surprised. If you claim to know me, this should not come as a surprise. This is a song the lyrics of which I taught my niece and nephew Angela and Mike when they were just kids; wherever we would drive, the music would be playing, and the songs would be sung along. This dandy jangle was no exception, except that yeah, it was. It was exceptional to share those moments with those children laughing and singing at the tops of our lungs about big butts, but only after all three of us shouting, as loudly as possible, “OH  MY  GAHD  BECKY,  LOOK  AT  HER  BUTT!”

For whatever it’s worth, this song was sort of a crossover for me in that I had never really listened to any rap songs before (not counting Blondie or the Sugar Hill Gang). I caught the bug with this tune because it was funny and happy and was basically all over the airwaves. How could it not be? The guy is standing on top of a giant ass in the video! A tongue in cheek (so to speak) look at rap as pop, pulling the hip hop groove into mainstream where it stands today. Between this and Whoomp There It Is by Tag Team, upbeat hip hop was the next wave of radio success.
