Sex [I’m A…] (Berlin)/Dominatrix Sleeps Tonight (Dominatrix)/Strip (Adam Ant) - day 48

Let’s talk about SEX! In honor of my dear bestie since Melnikoff’s class in 10th grade, Karen, today’s trio of songs are ones that remind me of her and are all about dirty sex! It’s a sexy three-way from our college days, and each one is raunchier than the next!

We’ll start with Berlin. You know them as the band who released one of the biggest ballads of the eighties from that Tom Cruise movie with all the planes and testosterone. I know Berlin from their string of amazing hits that were part of my early love affair with new wave music. There is something about the voice of lead singer Teri Nunn that exudes sex and passion; it makes you want to close your eyes and move in whatever direction your body allows.

I’ve already captured my love for their song No More Words in my first countdown six long years ago, but that won’t stop me from adding another Berlin monster to this year’s countdown. Before the post-Papa Don’t Preach era, while huge pop-acts like Madonna, George Michael and Salt N Pepa were making everyone everywhere start talking about sex, Berlin subversively gave us a song called Sex (I’m A..) about bondage and role play and everything in between. It’s fast paced like a racing heart. It’s also perhaps a little demeaning to women and certainly not for the feminist, but then with Teri Nunn in control, maybe that’s just exactly what it IS. After all, in her own words, it’s a song called Sex, but she refers to each act as “making love together.” So, who’s to say that these alternate types of role play aren’t feminist after all? Certainly not I.

And speaking of feministic hedonism, there’s The Dominatrix Sleeps Tonight. What the fuck is this song? Animals watch beyond the fire? Women beat their men! It’s a simple dance beat with the weirdest, most infectious lyrics about B&D. I remember first hearing of this song from Karen, living her best life off in Manhattan with all the cool kids. We were both immediately gripped, even though the song never got a lot of airplay out in Scranton. It was a treat whenever I’d actually hear it played on the radio!

Last but nowhere near least: Strip, by Adam Ant. It’s at times like this the great heaven knows that we wish we had NOT so many clothes… I can close my eyes and picture that dude about whom I was madly obsessed, the guy from the far end of Driscoll Hall (see my post about Hello by Lionel Richie..). As MY testosterone was raging without an outlet in my claustrophobic closet, I would daydream about him actually stripping for me, most especially when this song played on the radio.

Enjoy today’s All About Kinky Sex playlist! And happy birthday to my best gal!
