Uninvited (Alanis Morissette) - day 15

I love the music Alanis Morissette, but if you’ve been paying attention, you already knew this. Her sound, her vibe: unique and moving. After the mid-nineties release of her monster album Jagged Little Pill, you couldn’t escape her sound. It permeated the walls of the decade, and for me, that was a safe space. I would listen to that album on replay, it was that good.

Shortly thereafter, a new song was released on a film soundtrack for City Of Angels with Meg Ryan and Nic Cage: Uninvited. WHOA. What the fuck was this song? How could she possibly have followed up those monsters from JLP with yet another monster? Her yearning voice against such hard hitting rock and roll and a hypnotic four-beat tempo…

I’ve added a link to a live performance of this song, as it should be heard. I saw her perform this at Jones Beach on a hot summer evening under a full moon. It was honestly a time when I can say I felt the nearness of god. (Alanis even portrayed god in a 1999 Kevin Smith film called Dogma, and perfectly so.) I’ve seen a lot of musicians perform live, but this particular concert was like having sitting in concert with a deity.  Maybe Kevin Smith saw her live, too, because that would explain his casting.
