Lost In Your Eyes. From those first opening piano notes, my heart begins to flutter again. I am 23, completely vulnerable, wishing and praying to finally know what romance is. And then, at a house party, I see him. Although I’m dating someone and have come to this party with him, I am introduced to him as a friend’s date. But the electricity between our locked stare is undeniable. However, I am scared, and I am a giant coward, so I allow him to escape my view and realize, too late, that he has left the house party. There is no way to contact him without asking the guy I’m dating for the phone number of his friend, the same guy who’s dating the one in whose eyes I am lost. Did you follow all of that? So this song plays endlessly on my cassette player because I am the definition of a tragic hot mess. Soon, Debbie releases another one – Foolish Beat, and by this time I’m already in another relationship, still learning the ropes, still trying to fit square pegs into round holes (and no, that’s not a euphemism). Thinking about how I’m with the wrong person, that THE ONE is out there and how he got away, and how I let him go. And I’m too powerless to make anything happen, and by now it’s too late anyway. Lots of ‘ands’...Two songs that will always render me helpless inside my memory, trapped in the wishful thinking of what I could have, should have done differently, if only I’d been more confident. Hindsight, lost in my eyes.
