A song like none before, Drops Of Jupiter is melodic and rhythmic and lyrical and sad and beautiful and everything you want in a pop ballad. Pat Monahan’s voice is singularly mesmerizing, sweet and inimitable. I love that the lyrics are weird as fuck against such a pretty melody. I love the ache in his voice beside the hopeful pop of the violins and percussion. I don’t need to know what Pat’s intentions were when he wrote this masterpiece of our time; the song can take on whatever meaning it needs to for the poetic side of anyone listening. The dreamer in me identifies with all the natural and celestial references, dancing along the light of day, acting like summer and walking like rain. There is a sad element to this song as well; it was all over the airwaves during the break-up of two people I’d loved very much, and within the same period of time, our towers were attacked on 9-11. I hate that I relate this beautiful melody to such horrific memories. But there is beauty in heartache as we find out how much we’re loved by the people in our lives who may have been affected similarly in their own way. I choose to believe this. I choose to believe that each member of the long list of loved ones I’ve lost are sailing across the sun.
