Welcome to the 1990’s. While both girl-groups Wilson Philips and En Vogue implored us to hold on and Jesus Jones ushered in the decade right here and now, like a comet from Great Britain, Lisa Stansfield announced that she’d travel the world just to find her baby. All Around the World showcases the brand new, amazing talent that was (and still is) Stansfield. This song was like R&B lightning, and to me, it represented the agonizingly tumultuous relationship I had with… well, someone that I used to know. It’s a song about regret, blaming oneself for ruining a really good thing. I had myself convinced that she was killing me softly with her song, that every word was what I was screaming inside my head. I ran away from that relationship while still trying to hold on (thanks, Wilson Philips and En Vogue!) to the thing that brought us together. I ran to Florida, and then I ran back, and the whole time I had no idea which end was up. Though the nostalgic part of the song has died down, I still love this moment in time and the growth I experienced because of it. Hearing the soulful voice of Lisa Stansfield always brings me joy.
