There are movies that always stay with you. We all have them. I can name at least 5 off the top of my head. None, however, can ever top Sixteen Candles. I can’t count how many times I have seen this teen love comedy classic, and I wouldn’t even try, considering I’ll likely see it another few times before I die. All that said, this lovely, sway-worthy ballad, Whistle Down The Wind, is playing in the background at the school dance as Jake Ryan dances, wistfully, with his current girlfriend, secretly longing for awkward sophomore, Samantha Baker, who, also secretly, carries a torch for Jake. And though Jake is holding Caroline, we all know this song belongs to him and Samantha. Even as Caroline gives him some lame ultimatum, he clearly doesn’t give a shit because it’s Samantha on whom he has set his sights. And then there’s the classic ending, the perfect clincher for every daydreaming teenaged girl (and gay boy), as Jake meets Samantha at the church. You know it from the first note of Thompson Twins’ If You Were Here. The cars disappear and there stands Jake, waiting for his pretty-in-pink princess. It still gets me, as it does every time!
