Bridging discopop into the eighties was one of my earliest favorite bands, Shalamar. I was so in love with both Jody Watley AND Howard Hewitt! They were the darlings of WKTU and their music was bouncy and consistent. The first song I’d heard by Shalamar was The Second Time Around, replete with that quintessential 'pyoo!' sound that pervaded the disco airwaves. Then there was that delicious blend of beautiful male and female voices belonging to Howard and Jody. It was like a constant disco duet, two of my favorite things ever! They went on to release a string of disco hits including Make That Move which may be devoid of substance but teeming with joy and memories of Laura Javaruski from senior year. But the song I most love by this amazing disco dynamo is A Night To Remember. I have distinct memories of listening to this song in my brother’s bedroom (he had the only record player) and, as always, singling along at the top of my lungs so much so that Mr. Lombardi next door would shout over, 'I remember it already, Nicky!' That fucking guy certainly was nosey but, in retrospect, he makes for some funny stories.
