Living Legend. Rock Icon. Beatle. Paul. Paul Mc Cartney’s music has been, and will likely always continue to be, on all of my best-of lists. Silly Love Songs is this year’s entry and it does not disappoint. Imagine being on top of the world, the universe, and getting to do what you love, what you’re brilliant at, with your lover and best friend? To me, that perfectly illustrates this song, this moment, as Paul belts out a simple love song with Linda. There are horns and synths, beautiful harmonies, a fugue and a beautiful bass hook, everything one could want in a silly little love song! Silly Love Songs is one of so many transitional seventies songs by artists previously only known for their rock music. It’s a time I remember well, and with much joy. If I could go back in time to that room upstairs on Wright Avenue, to the record player in the spare room, I could spin Wings At The Speed Of Sound and fill the world with this silly love song. What’s wrong with that? I’d like to know.
