I was never really a fan of Bowie in the seventies during his androgynous days, and that’s primarily because of my own insecurities. I had the same issues with George Michael and Boy George at the respective starts of their careers in pop culture, but by the time he released his Modern Love album in the early eighties I was ready to get on board with the brilliance that was David Bowie. However, I discovered Heroes much, much later in my life; I mean, I’d heard it but I never identified with it until I’d heard it sung as part of the cacophonous medley in the brilliant Moulin Rouge. It was covered in the nineties by The Wallflowers, but their version didn’t quite stay with me like this one does. I chose this song today because it’s the birthday of one of MY heroes, Mrs. Janice Dennis, a person to whom I owe just oh so much. I was a wallflower in 1981 when I first became aware of Mrs. Dennis. She helped me understand myself and offered me light in a very dark closet. She gave me a voice. She did and said the things my parents weren’t equipped to do or say, whether through praise or by example. She led me to feel included and special and her wisdom and guidance have stayed with me all these years later. Everyone should have that adult in their life to help them dive deep and touch upon the talent they possess; certainly every scared gay kid should have a Mrs. Dennis in their life, specifically in their formative years when so few role models present themselves. I am LUCKY to have had her in my life. I am lucky to STILL. I love you, Jan!
