Eyes Without A Face / Flesh For Fantasy

Back when my cousin Cris and I were impressionable teenagers, she had several posters on her bedroom wall, including that of Billy Idol. He was larger than life with that white hair standing perfectly…

Don’t Cry

Seal broke into pop culture with a smash song that stirred us; we were, in fact, all a little bit Crazy. Soon he followed that crowd-pleaser up with another giant which was married to the Batman film…

53 to 53Dec 3, 2018DAY 18

Good Riddance Time Of Your Life

Later into the nineties, amid the absolute worst moment in my small, predictable life, I found comfort in a guitar-and-strings ballad by an alt-punk band whose sound was usually crass and boisterous. It was…

What's Up

1992 was a year of radical and amazing change in music. And I was alive and living through it, aware and amazed. I actually remember exactly where and with who I was the first time I ever heard What’s Up by…

You Are Loved Don’t Give Up

This song happened onto the world around 2006, just before I met my Woof and during the years that my sister was fighting her greatest battle. I remember pretty clearly a, autumn day in 2007 at the start of…

Now And Forever

Right from the opening note of this song, I am transported back to 1992. It’s difficult to explain what that means except to just push through and talk about the aspirations insinuated in this song, Now And…

Harmony / Empty Garden Hey Hey Johnny

I can’t believe I have never had a song by Sir Elton on this countdown before now. That said, considering his brilliant, endless catalog spanning 5 decades, I tried my best to narrow it down to just one and…

Him

Until recently I had no idea that 'Yacht Rock' was a legitimate music genre, but now that I am aware of its existence, it makes perfect sense, and it turns out I’ve been a giant fan of Yacht Rock since its…

Through The Years

If you’ve paid any attention to me at all these past few years, you may know why Through The Years is on my list. This should have been the song to which I’d have danced the mother-son dance at my wedding.…

Do You Wanna Funk / Smalltown Boy

Today’s double-shot is dedicated to the movies I saw as a very young gay guy just coming out and trying to find common ground in a world that evidently hated me and my existence. I first discovered a movie…

Le Freak / Get Lucky

His name is synonymous with that funky signature bassline. He’s responsible for some of the most amazing disco and funk tracks of our time. He’s worked with and produced music for such legendary artists…

What You Won’t Do For Love

I am a sucker for a saxophone solo, or a song that features any kind of saxophone. You should know this about me. Today’s song does NOT disappoint in that department. This is What You Won’t Do For Love by…

Everybody Hurts

Some songs in my countdown are as much about the music video (remember those?) as they are about the actual song itself. Everybody Hurts by R.E.M. is one of those songs. The video is a focus on people’s…

Forever Young

When the title of a song is literal perfection in describing one’s mental state, you love that song and play the shit out of it when it comes on the radio. Or in this case, SiriusXM channel 33 First Wave…

Bluer Than Blue

Back to weepy ballad land with Bluer Than Blue by one-hit wonder balladeer, Michael Johnson. I found this song in a moment, relatively recently in the scheme of things, when loneliness started to creep in.…
