Wicked Little Town

I discovered the film adaptation of this small off-Broadway show called Hedwig and the Angry Inch sometime in the mid-00s. I immediately fell in love with everything about it: the damaged protagonist, every…

What If

Did you ever come across something so random and amazing that you wonder how no one else knows about it? Imagine the spin of my head when I first heard this beautiful, regret-filled ballad by Oscar winning…

Please Don’t Go

When a disco/R&B band releases a ballad, it’s usually lost in the shuffle, but Please Don’t Go not only went very noticed, it also got a nineties cover version and became a big hit for KWS in 1992 as they…

By Your Side

By Your Side by Sade is one of those songs whose message didn’t quite resonate with me until many years later after its release. First of all, let’s discuss Sade. This chick is a mega-talent. Understated…

All The Man That I Need

The first time I fell in love, real love, with someone who was my equal, my friend, my lover, was at the end of 1990. Many of you know who this boy was, and some of you went through all my self-induced…

Shame

Okay, how did this song not make my top 50 to 50? This is classic disco at its finest. Shame by Evelyn 'Champagne' King is what disco feels like, what it means. Shame is not only a great disco song; it’s…

Tragedy

A staple of seventies music, the Bee Gees were responsible for a million hits of their own as well as creating monster records for other recording artists, like yesterday’s golden gumdrop Emotion. And…

Emotion

1978 was rich with songs like this, especially on the heels of the phenomenon called Saturday Night Fever. The Bee Gees could quite literally do no wrong. So even the songs they didn’t actually sing lead…

I Just Died In Your Arms

There’s something about the puffy start of the song that sucks me in. It’s one of those songs that has convinced me I can sing karaoke. In my head I hear the word quintessential when this song comes on, as,…

Shadows Of The Night

You know me, I love my eighties mullet goddesses. Benatar is one of them. Too many hits to list, each one deserving of the title. In fact, one of the very first 45s I ever bought with my own allowance was…

You Oughtta Know

I remember exactly where I was the first time I heard this powerful, stirring song by one of the giants of the nineties, Alanis Morissette. You Oughtta Know is an anthem for any woman, any person, who’d…

I Will Survive

I don’t know how I missed this one on the previous two years’ worth of countdowns. K-Tel Record in hand, hairbrush in the other, 13-year-old me popped that sucker on the turntable and played the grooves…

You Know I’m No Good / Back To Black

We can all agree Amy Winehouse’s career, her life, was way too short. She was a powerhouse vocalist in a vague time of pop hits sounding one like the other. Suddenly we’re gifted with this unique…

Lead Me On

Among the sea of ballads from my early teens is this lost classic by the diva who gave us Right Back Where We Started From, a song that was played at every single one of my junior high school dances. But…

You Could Have Been With Me / Almost Over You

Sheena Easton blasted onto the pop scene in my favorite year with Morning Train, that kitschy classic which evokes an earworm as big as Rick Astley’s Never Gonna Give You Up. But when the glamorous Scot…
