Drops Of Jupiter

A song like none before, Drops Of Jupiter is melodic and rhythmic and lyrical and sad and beautiful and everything you want in a pop ballad. Pat Monahan’s voice is singularly mesmerizing, sweet and…

Say

Another song by the dazzlingly talented John Mayer. Say is such a beautiful, melancholy song with, really, the only message that matters in this life. Lest we are left with regret, it’s best to just say…

Fifty-Three to 53Dec 18, 2018DAY 3

I Want It That Way

Presenting another song on the countdown that’s ALL feeling. Ok, also harmonies and beautiful young men, but mostly feeling. The first time I’d ever heard I Want It That Way was, obviously, in the height of…

Call On Me / Wishing You Were Here

Chicago. No, not the city (though I actually really loved the city the one time we’ve ever visited). No, I’m talking about Chicago, the kick-ass rock and horns band from the late sixties and early…

Should’ve Never Let You Go

Sixties and seventies crooner Neil Sedaka made my list last year with his groovy classic Laughter In The Rain, but that was never the song I loved best. Today I present the song he sung with his teenaged…

Fifty-Three to 53Dec 15, 2018DAY 6

Suedehead

Morrissey is one of those artists that doesn’t really need an intro. He’s theatrical and his silky voice is like that of a Siren, drawing you into whatever madness he’s singing about. With Suedehead, he…

Mad About You

At the start of 1986, I was no longer living at home with my parents. I was holding down a job at the mall and making a new life back on Long Island, meeting new people and rekindling old friendships. The…

All Around The World

Welcome to the 1990’s. While both girl-groups Wilson Philips and En Vogue implored us to hold on and Jesus Jones ushered in the decade right here and now, like a comet from Great Britain, Lisa Stansfield…

Sam

What more can I say about Olivia Newton-John that I haven’t already said? Two of her songs garnered the Day 3 spot in my first countdown 3 years ago, finishing just a nose behind Kiss On My List by H&O and…

Fifty-Three to 53Dec 11, 2018DAY 10

Breakout

From the first opening beats of percussion, I am in love with Breakout by Swing Out Sister. It’s a very dated song; it sounds exactly like the era to which it belongs, but for me, I hear only love! I am…

A Night To Remember

Bridging discopop into the eighties was one of my earliest favorite bands, Shalamar. I was so in love with both Jody Watley AND Howard Hewitt! They were the darlings of WKTU and their music was bouncy and…

Fifty-Three to 53Dec 9, 2018DAY 12

Doctor Doctor

It’s a pretty odd choice by a group known primarily for their major crossover pop hit Hold Me Now, but for me the best song by eighties New Wave band Thompson Twins is Doctor! Doctor! And, frankly, the song…

Fifty-Three to 53Dec 8, 2018DAY 13

You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling

Quick quiz: who is my favorite male duo act ever? Whose hair and overall style did I die trying to emulate throughout the entire decade of the eighties? Whose song, Kiss On My List, beat out Bonnie Tyler’s…

Fifty-Three to 53Dec 7, 2018DAY 14

Can’t Stop The Feeling

Finally, a happy song! Admit it, you love this song too! It makes you feel electric-wavy! I haven’t seen Trolls, but I can tell you Can’t Stop The Feeling by heartthrob JT is definitely one of my favorite…

People Are People / It’s No Good

Few artists in the history of music define their genre. Michael Jackson was the King of Pop and Donna Summer was the reigning Queen of Disco. Arguably, the defining artists of New Wave were the one band…
