You Could Have Been With Me / Almost Over You

Sheena Easton blasted onto the pop scene in my favorite year with Morning Train, that kitschy classic which evokes an earworm as big as Rick Astley’s Never Gonna Give You Up. But when the glamorous Scot…

DAY 31

Love Will Keep Us Together

More seventies! Love Will Keep Us Together is the ultimate sound of the seventies, in my opinion. We’re talking about the scissorific voice of Toni Tennille with her short ‘n sassy hair style that took the…

Barely Breathing

1997 was NOT a good year for me, as most of you know, so having a song from that year be one of my favorites of all time actually says something. Adorkably white and sideburney with his guitar all slingy…

I Saw The Light / Hello It’s Me

Continuing along the lines of childhood memories, these two Rundgren gems are right in the sweet spot of my AM Radio memories. Mom, Sis, Greg & Linda. I Saw The Light is, by far, one of those that brings me…

I’ll Cover You

So, in the nineties I rediscovered that I loved Broadway musicals. There was a time when Frank and I would venture into the city and see a show, and most of the time they were either funny or boring, but…

You Make Me Feel Like Dancing

Imagine, if you will, that it’s 1976 again. You get up feeling a little groggy and fumble your way into the dark kitchen as the sun hasn’t quite risen yet outside. You go through the motions of preparing…

Laughter In The Rain

I remember thinking that this is what romance must feel like for a boy and a girl. Running in the rain, trying to find a dry place to cuddle up and kiss. It was one of the first times in my young life when…

Fifty-Two to 52Nov 14, 2017DAY 37

Always Tomorrow

What a beautiful message this song has, though for some people there isn’t a tomorrow. It’s hopeful and optimistic amidst the ballad setting. I have always loved the voice of Gloria Estefan, but something…

Who You Love

John Mayer is one of my favorite artists to emerge from this shitty new millennium. Along with a voice like a male angel, he is a brilliant musician. I have seen him live several times and he has always put…

Fifty-Two to 52Nov 12, 2017DAY 39

Love Will Lead You Back / Heart Of Stone

The first of these songs is a tough one. It’s a song I love but it’s a song I allowed myself to sabotage the best thing in my world for something that was bad and wrong and already long dead. Her message…

Fifty-Two to 52Nov 11, 2017DAY 40

Lost In Your Eyes / Foolish Beat

Lost In Your Eyes. From those first opening piano notes, my heart begins to flutter again. I am 23, completely vulnerable, wishing and praying to finally know what romance is. And then, at a house party, I…

Video Killed The Radio Star

It’s from 1979 but let’s face it, you remember it from August 1, 1981. It inaugurated MTV to a generation of music lovers like me, but it was definitive of what the sound was all about in the 1980s. Few…

Isn’t It Time / Every Time I Think Of You

Honestly, I have no early memories of these 2 amazing songs by the Babys; in fact, I never even knew of John Waite until his own solo smash Missing You from 1984, a song that was literally all over the air…

Rise

This is one of two instrumental songs in this year’s countdown; therefore it’s obviously not about lyrics but rather the way the sounds make me feel. I remember actually physically watching General Hospital…

You Keep Me Hangin’ On / Venus

Two old classics, each with an eighties upbeat disco reboot. Just the way I like my old classics. The first is one of those songs that, when I hear it in my car, I have to act out what Kim Wilde did in the…
