Setting Sail

Recently Chris and I discovered Modern Love, an Amazon Prime series based on a weekly column from the pages of The New York Times. Each episode is a real life situation, but each one is different from the…

That Lady

Anchorman helped bring back amazing classics in its seventies newsroom spoof, but one in particular, That Lady by the Isley Brothers, was featured as lothario Ron Burgundy first lay eyes on sexy Victoria…

Send Her My Love

When Journey did ballads, man, did they do ballads right! Some were actual slow-dance songs, but some, like Send Her My Love, were what we now appropriately call power ballads. It’s quite possible that…

If You Asked Me To / Water From The Moon / I Love You, Goodbye

The songs and voice of Celine Dion have yet to be on my countdowns, and I think that’s because almost every song she sung in the nineties, when she held reign as the Voice, reminds me of that one person,…

The Great Beyond

The Great Beyond is a song about the life and hardships of late comedian Andy Kaufmann, but to me it’s one of the best songs ever recorded by College Radio band R.E.M. (next, only, to last year’s Everybody…

Steal Away

At the end of the seventies, there was a wave of what would eventually be called Yacht Rock. As that time period is one of my favorite times in music because of all the angst in my early teens, I find joy…

All The Things She Said

2003, a year of phoenix-like rebirth for me, gave us All The Things She Said, an oddly hypnotic song by a Russian girl-duo called t.A.T.u. I love the chaos to the music – it sounds like what fear and…

Heart Hotels

When I was in high school, I was aware of the balladry of Dan Fogelberg. Leader Of The Band, Longer, Same Auld Lang Syne… But the song that sticks to my skin is Heart Hotels. This one reminds me of that…

There's No Stopping Us

There was a street dance phenomena in the early eighties called break dancing. Amidst the hype, a few movies were released featuring break dancers battling it out to amazing music. Hence, presenting…

I Beg Your Pardon

No substance, just kicks. I Beg Your Pardon was a song that created a flood of bodies on the dance floor in 1989 when Vincent and I would go and live our best lives at Grand Central. As we’d get ready at…

Erotic City

Sex set to music: no one did it better than Prince. No one ever will again. And Erotic City is Prince 101; an introduction to the seduction. Prince WAS a revolution. He crossed all musical barriers with the…

Whistle Down The Wind / If You Were Here

There are movies that always stay with you. We all have them. I can name at least 5 off the top of my head. None, however, can ever top Sixteen Candles. I can’t count how many times I have seen this teen…

Heroes

I was never really a fan of Bowie in the seventies during his androgynous days, and that’s primarily because of my own insecurities. I had the same issues with George Michael and Boy George at the…

Sweet Love

One of the last of the great eighties balladeers, Anita Baker gave us this beautiful pop ballad, a gift to the VH1 airwaves. Anita sways and moves, almost in a convulsive way, as she belts Sweet Love and…

Groove Is In The Heart

How do you talk about a song that has nothing much to it other than making you feel happy? That’s’ what I’m giving you today: the explosive debut dance cart single by Deee-Lite from 1990. Talk about a way…
